Major Phil Packer Attempts the London Marathon for 26 Charities - Including RYA Sailability

RYA Sailability is due to receive a cash boost courtesy of Major Phil Packer who is aiming to walk the Virgin London Marathon in April to raise money for charity. He will be aiming to complete the course in 26 hours with each of the 26 miles being on behalf of a different good cause. RYA Sailability is his nominated charity for the 25th mile.

After sustaining a spinal cord Injury in February 2008 and during his rehabilitation in hospital at Headley Court, Major Phil Packer decided to embark upon numerous physical challenges to raise funds for charity and raise awareness of the charities he supports.

His three main challenges in 2009 included rowing the Channel with Al Humphreys, walking the London Marathon over 14 days and hauling himself up El Capitan with a support team of some of the country’s best climbers. Phil inspired millions and gained unexpected National recognition, including Fundraiser of the Year at the Pride of Britain Awards and the Helen Rollason Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Inspired in turn by those he has met on his journey, Phil is embarking on a new life to dedicate his time and energy to supporting young people and young people with disabilities. Working with the advice and partnerships of Disability Organisations and Charities, his intent is to provide an opportunity of hope for young people with disabilities between the ages of 16 and 25.

RYA Sailability is the governing body of disabled sailing in the UK and because of its good work has gained the support of ambassadors around the UK including Phil Packer, Geoff Holt, Helena Lucas and Keith Harris.

The charity operates through 200 sites in the UK and helps over 25,000 disabled people to participate in the sport of sailing at various skill levels. This includes the ‘Beginner to Winner’ initiative that takes people from novices through to elite sailing and for some onto Paralympics level. Making all of this possible is a team of over 6,000 volunteers.

RYA Sailability has grown in recent years while managing still to keep administration costs below 5% meaning that nearly all donations go directly to the front line. The charity in the last two years has recruited new trustees who have been hard at work securing new sponsors, grants and expanding personal giving opportunities. All of this has had a dramatic effect of the activities the charity supports.

It has also been fortunate enough to continue to gain financial support from donors. There are many people who have become inspired by the amazing work carried out at the sites and have consequently become regular donors as well as in some cases becoming involved in volunteering.

One of those people is Phil Packer. Phil will begin his latest challenge at 10am on 25th April and is due to finish at 12pm on the 26th April.

To continue his intent to aim and inspire young people with disability, deprived young people and to support injured service personnel, he will walk each mile with a support walker between the ages of 16 and 25. The support walker for each leg will be nominated by each charity and the support walker for RYA Sailability will be Alexandra Rickham who is a paralympic SKUD sailor.

For more information on Phil’s remarkable challenge, visit www.philpacker.com

Alternatively, to donate direct to RYA Sailability please visit www.justgiving.com/rya

Annual Multiclass Regatta a Resounding Success

<span style=\"font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-fareast- -GB; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">Rya Sailability Regatta 2008.

On the 8th, 9th and 10th of August RYA Sailability held its second annual multiclass regatta at Rutland Sailing Club. The event had proved to be such a resounding success last year that over the last twelve months a huge amount of organisation, particularly from the event organiser Richard Johnson, had gone into making the regatta possible again in 2008.
This is the only regatta of its kind in disabled sailing, bringing together all the different types of accessible boats and joining the 175 Sailability groups from around the UK for three days of sailing and socialising.

The regatta kicked off on Friday 8th August with registration of over eighty competitors and sixty boats. After a briefing the boats hit the water despite rain and force four winds. The classes present were the 2.4, the Access 2.3, 303 and Liberty, The Martin 16, squibs, the transition squads Challenger and the Paralympics class SKUD 18. There were two races back to back and after nearly three hours of highly competitive sailing the participants came off the water in time for the official opening. Debbie Blachford opened the weekend with words of encouragement and delight that this event is now in its second year and had attracted even more sailors and volunteers this year. Debbie also thanked the continued support of the three main sponsors of the event The National Sports Foundation, The Fawcett Trust and RYA Sailability. Pat Dodd, Chairperson of RYA Sailability also gave a few words on how proud she was that RYA Sailability was a supporter and funder of such events, ' these events are a perfect showcase of what can be achieved by the fundraising of RYA Sailability Trust, we will continue to work hard so that Debbie and her team have the availability of funds in the future to continue the great work in RYA Sailability and to continue to increase the number of people involved in disabled sailing in the UK'. The opening finished with a BBQ for all participants, giving everyone the chance to socialise and swap valuable information about how their individual Sailabilty group is run and any new initiatives that have been taken on. The atmosphere at the event was superb, the costiveness surrounding RYA Sailability and what has been achieved was clear to see.

Saturday, the second day of racing, was auction packed with four races, two in the morning followed by a further two after lunch. The sailors were determined despite the consistent rain and at times overpowering wind. The racing was very close and with only a few competitors being forced to retire, the fleets were out in force. As the last few boats came in at 5pm everyone was on tenterhooks to see who would be the overall winners of the two day fleet racing. The results were put together and spot prizes were given out during the gala dinner for the winners of each fleet. The dinner was laid for 150 people that were present at the event. These included the sailors, helpers, race co coordinators and carers. The meal was wonderful and the atmosphere full of fun with sailing stories being swapped and the laughter becoming louder as the night wore on.

Sunday saw the day start with a few sore heads but much excitement surrounding the 120 minute pursuit race. The wind was a strong force five and if there has ever been any question about the level of competitiveness in disabled sailing the sailors that went out on Sunday would silence that question indefinitely. The boats were being tested to there limit and the sailors with them but it seemed to be the spirit of the day that unless your boat was broken or turned over the sailors kept going. It was a truly inspiring sight. At 1.30pm after nearly two and a half hours on the water everyone came ashore and discarded their very wet sailing kit for the last time in the regatta.

The prize giving started at 3pm.Many special guests had arrived to hand out the prizes to the various fleets. Richard Langford , Chairman of RYA, congratulated everyone on their contribution to the weekend and had a few words for the sailors'" I am a member of Rutland sailing club and looking at the weather today it would have taken a lot for me to have gone out, so to see the scale of the numbers on the water today was inspiring'. Richard presented the prizes to the winners of the challenger class, John Draper and to the Access 2.3 winner Clare Andrew, Access303 winner Paul Holzerr and Access liberty winner Bill Mitchell. Pauline Harrison of IFDS presentedthe prizes to theMartin 16 class, the winner being Chris Atkin and her husband Ian Harrison former president of IFDS presented the prize to the winner of the SKUD 18 Class, Nick Birrell.Ian also wished the members of the SKUD 18 class representing Great Britain in Beijing , including Nick, the very best of luck. The manager of Parasport was also in attendance to present the prizes to the winners of the squib fleet and the 2.4 fleet. The winner of the squib fleet was Alison Gunn, a newcomer to racing and to the regatta. Alison was delighted that she had won given that she had never raced before. Alison is visually impaired and is one of RYA Sailability's regional organisers, she has also shown that anyone can take part, do well and help to spread the word about what is being achieved in RYA Sailability. The winner of the 2.4 fleet was Megan Pascoes, who will also be representing Great Britain in the paralympics. The last prizes to be given out were those of the pursuit race, Pat Dodd gave out engraved photo frames with vouchers to pick a personal photo to all the pursuit race fleet winners. Sue Ellis, wife of the late Ken Ellis had kindly attended to give the Ken Ellis, former Chairman of RYA, special trophy to the champion of champion, the winner of the pursuit race. The winner from the 2008 regatta was John Draper of the Challenger class. John is also a member of the Transition squad and was delighted with his win, promising to come back next year to defend his title.

The event was closed by Debbie Blachford who gave many notes of thanks to all who attended and helped make the weekend such a success. In particular Rutland were thanked for providing not only the most fantastic facilities and catering but the most willing helpers and volunteers. Debbie also confirmed that the evnts had been booked for next year, she announced ' I am delighted to inform you that the multiclass regatta will be held on the 14th, 15th and 16th of August 2009. This has been such an inspiring event event for everone inolved and because of the continued support of our sponsors we will be able to continue to make this an annual occurrence'.The organisers along with RYA Sailability are hoping that next year the event will gain in momentum even more with the presence of more sailors and boats.RYA Sailability can be rached at info@ryasailability.org.uk for all regatta enquiries.

RYA Sailability 2nd Annual Conference held at Rutland.

The RYA Sailability National Conference 2008 was held on Saturday 1st November at Rutland Sailing Club. The purpose of the conference is to inform and educate delegates about the achievements during the year of both RYA Sailability and its parent, the Royal Yachting Association.

Demonstrating Sailability's integration with sailing’s National Body, the Conference was opened by the RYA Chairman Richard Langford, who welcomed nearly 100 delegates representing 32 disabled sailing groups and praised their efforts to promote disabled sailing, pledging to continue support from the RYA for what is an increasingly important part of our sport.

The meeting continued with an operational update by Sailability Manager Debbie Blachford, who outlined all the new initiatives that have been started since the last conference.

There is new publicity material, including a DVD and Sailability TV, which will be starting in March 2009. Many new partnerships have been forged with disabled organisations, such as RNIB and the “Sailing On” project that is spread over 13 sites and has special tactile achievement cards for blind sailors. There are other new schemes in development, like the Deafwave project and the Volunteer Recognition scheme, with Andy Fell’s Awareness Training and the new Sailability Award Certificates to support them. Dedicated children’s’ projects are finding lots of new young sailors and there is at last a full complement of Regional Organisers plus four new Trustees, to support the Operational Plan.

Trustee Robyn Griffith Jones highlighted some notable fund raising events, including a £90,000 anonymous gift, Duran Duran lead singer Simon LeBon attracting media attention at the Sailability Sunsail regatta and Geoff Holt helping to raise £25,000 at the Skandia ball. Sailability is the Charity of this year’s Earls Court Boat Show, who have made an ‘opt-in’ 50p donation of every ticket sold. There will also be a Sailability stand at the show, raffling a Bug that Laser have donated. To make donating even easier, it will soon be possible to give online through the new website www.ryasailability.org.uk
Sailability Trust presentation.

From the RYA, John Thorne, the National Sailing Coach gave an update on the National sailing Scheme and Gillian Wright, Windsurfing Development Officer, reminded us that disability doesn’t always mean lack of mobility and disabled people do want a choice. There is windsurfing equipment adapted to suit peoples’ disabilities and the Team 15 scheme can be tailored for use by disabled groups. Gareth Brooks explained the function of the RYA Regional Development Officers, which is to set up training schemes and centres, run the Onboard scheme and help clubs with development. To find out more, the details of all these schemes are available on the RYA website.

George Barker, the Sailability Race Development Coach, outlined his role and introduced a new booklet called“Beginner to Winner” which describes the pathway from starting to sail right up to racing in the Paralympics.

Mike Gallon, a Rotarian who organises the Rotary-Sailability Collaboration Project, gave a detailed outline of what Rotary is and how they can supply management & expertise to groups, as well as fund raising. Rotary gave vital help to Geoff Holt during his Personal Everest circumnavigation and Rotarians from the Peterborough & Waveney groups described to the conference their experiences of starting and managing disabled sailing groups.

Finally, John Harris-Burland of Mindworks Marketing told us what to think about if you want to effectively market your group or club. The advice about doing all the research and identifying exactly what your product and market is before any promotion or selling begins is priceless.

Delegates then split into forum groups chaired by their Regional Organiser and this was followed by a final question & answer session with the panel.

In the evening an excellent dinner was provided by Rutland Sailing Club and, between courses, the RYA Sailability Volunteer awards were given to those present who had made Significant, Outstanding or Exceptional Contributions for service to disabled sailing. Each volunteer nominated in the categories were presented with a recognition certificate and gift. The award winners for each category were, Rory Morrison – Exceptional Contribution, Rosy Meadow - Outstanding Contribution, Carol Bloyce - Significant Contribution

This was followed by a (free) raffle courtesy of Sailability.

On Sunday the Try-a-Boat session was less well attended than the dinner due to the miserable weather but most people agreed that it was a valuable chance to compare the different models on display.

Jack Daly, 16, is a keen sailor who helps out with the RYA Sailability group at Westbere Sailing club. Through this work Jack has been has inspired to raise funds for the charity by sailing around the UK single handed in his Corribbe MK 11 'Padiwak'. He is a firm believer that everyone, if possible, should be able to experience the fun of sailing.

The challenge will start as soon as GCSE's are over in the summer. Jack has chosen a Corribee, renowned for sea keeping capabilties and traditional yacht characteristics, to take him on his 10 week challenge. He plans to sail for a maximum of seven hours each day overnighting in marinas and safe anchorages whenever possible.

Various sponsorships have already been secured, mainly from equipment manufacturers, but Jack is still keen to talk to anyone else who can help. If enough sponsorship is raised it means donations can go straight to RYA Sailability.

Jack adds -

'RYA Sailability is a really amazing organisation. I have been to several centres and always found a team of enthusiastic, dedicated people who are there to help disabled people enjoy sailing. I love seeing the smiles on people's faces when they experience the freedom of sailing for the first time. The more people I can help to achieve this the better.'

To find out more and how to help with Jack's challenge contact jack@sail-the-dream.co.uk
